American Express statements do not include the year in the date column of the transactions table, this needs to be manually added to be able to import the bank statement's transactions in accounting software like Xero, MYOB and Quickbooks.
We extract the statement period from American Express statements to get the year associated with transactions, this allows us to complete the dates so that they can be directly imported to cloud accounting software packages.
Section 286 of the Corporations Act requires financial records to be kept for at least seven years after the transactions covered by the records are complete.
As a result Australian Banks and Credit Unions provide 7 years of bank statements for download as PDF but only 2 years of data through Open Banking.
